The Gorongoza reserve was started in 1921, covered about 1000 km2 bounded by the Inhandue river in the north, the Urema river in the east, and to the south and west by imaginary lines parallel to the courses of the Pungue and Urema rivers. In 1935 the reserve was enlarged to 3200 sq.km.
