Original text on this topic:
ABSTRACT - In 1947 Hélène of Orléans, Duchess of Aosta, donated her collection of hunting trophies to the National Library “Vittorio Emanuele III” located in the Royal Palace of Naples (Italy). Such specimens, together with the rich personal library, a large photographic archive, an ethnological collection and numerous family heirlooms constitute the Fondo Aosta. In this document we offer a critical catalog of 149 specimens of mammals, mostly of African origin. Although there were no indi- vidual labels, we supplement the zoological identification with the help of the photographic archive and relevant literature produced by the Duchess of Aosta and Maurizio de Vito Piscicelli, the officer of the Royal Italian Army who accompanied her on travels in Africa. The Fondo Aosta collection includes 43 species belonging to 29 genera; 127 specimens belong to the Bovidae family. Among the most interesting examples are the skin of a Nubian wild ass, two impala heads belonging to the subspecies Aepyceros melampus rendilis and 13 skulls belonging the genus Syncerus, notable for their morphological variability.
