Everyone knows that there are no Rhinoceros at Sundarban, but few people claim that there are still) might be few rhinos in the deep forest. However it is true that long back there used to be lots of rhino but nobody knows why none of the rhinos are to be seen now. Before 30 yrs ago a skeleton of a big rhino was found at house of AffazTulla Sarkar who lives in Harinagar village which is located at Sundarban near Shyamnagar police station. It was found during pond excavation. The skeleton is still reserved at their house. Under the same police station one more skeleton was found at SreefalKathi village. Six more skeletons were found at dhumghat village. The old people claim to have witnessed Rhinos with own eyes in the sreefalakathi and khauraghat jungle. The horn of the rhinos are very valuable.Usually they are herbivorous. We have seen 6 skeletons at house of Makhanlal Adhikari who stays at Ishawipur. There are no bison, eleplants and cows at Sundarban. But there used to be lots of Bison at Bagerghat area at Sundarban. During 1590 During pathan rebellion he was sent to Fathehbad by Mansen. In Ain-i-Akbari document it was mentioned that there used to be lots of eleplants and other wild animals. There used to be Indian crested porcupine and leopards at Sundarban. The tribals used to hunt and eat rhinos and bison. They used to call the bison as 'Boyar' and the tribal girls used to talk about hunting 'Boyar' amd rhinos as hunting deers. They used to call Rhino as 'Gara'. There is a village called "Gara mara" under Rampal police station. Rhinos do not breed like deers. It has been said that Rhino will produce offspring once in 12 yrs. Because there were lots of Rhinos found, that is why the river is named as 'Gara River'. Mr Bivarej has seen lots of wild boar and bisons at Kurri Mukri which is south to Bakergong. That time there were no deers. Regarding Rhino Alexandar Hamilton said in the year of 1727 there used to be lots of Rhinos at Sundarban. He said Rhino is a very ferocious animal. It eats other animals along with its skin. Till mid of ninteen century there used to be lots of Rhinos near estuary of river Malancho and Roymangol. It got extint because of the local poachers. GandarKhalib jungle is a dwelling place for Tigers and its a scary place. There used to be a time when lots of Rhinos used to roam here, that is why it is called GandarKhali. The horn of Rhinos are very expensive. At ancient days the kings at Egypt used to drink from Rhinos horn to save themselves from poison.
