Chas. R. Cock, Lieut. 43rd Regt.N.I.
Major C.R. Cock, Deputy Assistant Adjutant-General, Eastern Frontier Section, was killed in 1877
March 1864, shooting with Capt. B.
first at Rakuldooly, small village 16 miles below Goalpara, 1 March 1864
killed huge male rhinoceros, 6 ft 3 in height at the wither, horn 13 inches. This was a very long horn and the finest we shot out of 29 rhinoceros. Then kills a large old female with a fair horn.
5 March 1864. Kill rhino male, horn 12 inches
7 March 1864, move to Luckipore.
14 March to Tickri-killa, shot 3 male rhino with fair horns
17 March 1864 to a salt-lick in the Garrow hills. A rhinoceros came to wallow “I certainly never expected a rhino among these hills.” not shot, waiting for wild elephant
19 March, walked back to Tickri-killa. With B. shot a female rhino, which had a young one, which we determined to capture. As I had brought a strong cotton rope, we made the fellows get off the elephants and catch him. My mahout caught him by the ears first, and was immediately knocked over. We then all laid hold of him, and tied the cotton rope round his neck and middle, then fastened him up to the carcass of his mother, there being no tree available, and sending a pad elephant into Trickri killa, we summoned the whole population to drag him to the stockade. This was a work of great difficulty, as they had a mile to drag him through Assam grass, about 14 feet high, but at length they got him in all safe, and he soon took his milk kindly, drinking four quarts daily.
April return to Gowhatty by boat. Bag included 29 rhinos. At Goalparah I went to the court and demaded the Government reward for the animals we shot, which is for a rhinoceros 10 shillings. (Govt did not pay for the rhino, as he kept the horns). I sold my rhinoceros horns, buffalo’s horns, tusks, and young rhinoceros for 55 pounds.
