[303] 7 Apr Rhinoceros seen in vicinity but then only tracks. 8 Apr in D-pore jungles, campto B-pore. Rhino shot at, “charfed down the line with the intention of breaking through or swimming the river Koosey toour right, when the dense jungles of Chuppairee would most likely give himsafe retreat.” Animal shot several times by L.W. and G.W.S. – Pursued rhino long distance. Animal seen, “saw the rhino about 800 yards ahead, approaching the river which he soon reached, and was then fairly seen by all crossing the sand, but soon again disappeared and was next viewed ascending the opposite bank having swam the river. Headed for H-e and was lost in heavy jungle. Rhino charged and was shot by H.S. and also by H.C. which brought him down. Animal skinned by JLS, IW and HS. – some idea of the size of the beast is the fact that the skin with head and legs took over 35 men to put on a cart. When cured, it took 20men to put the skin on board the steamer at Carragola. 9 Apr rhino skin was brought to campon a cart pulled by about 50 natives. It was made over to a Taxidermist (that Dr.A. of the Indian Museumhad sent upto get some specimens.)

Before skinning measurements were taken (feet – inches)
Length from nose to tip of tail 14 – 0
Height at shoulder 6 – 5
Girth round chest 10 – 9
Circumference of fore-arm 3 – 6
Circumference of foot 2 – 5
Circumference of base of horn 1 - 11
Height of horn 0 – 9
