The story of an Asian elephant known as Hans has been retrieved from contemporaneous texts of the 18th century. Very celebrated at that time, this outstanding specimen was stuffed in 1803 by the famous taxidermist Louis Dufresne, whose personal collection was purchased by the University of Edinburgh. Hans was later integrated into national French natural science collections, but was only recently identified as the one actually preserved in the Museum of Natural History in Bourges. Archives and recent observations helped to retrieve the complete historical background of Hans, including the story of the taxidermy process. The author questions the new status of this historic, scientific and cultural testimony and the way it should be restored and displayed to the public.
