African species. 1. Lips square and broad to pluck grass; pronounced nuchal hump visible when the head is raised; skull longer and narrower, with occipital part produced backwards beyond the condyles; high crowned molars and premolars adapted for grazing - genus Ceratotherium.
2. Upper lip pointed and prehensile-a finger-like projection which aids browsing; no nuchal hump; the back has much more of a hollow/saddle appearance when viewed from the side; ears are more rounded and 'trumpet-like' ; skull shorter and broader, with occipital part not produced backwards beyond the condyles; molar teeth are lower crowned with high cusps to support browsing - genus Diceros
