Then in 1959 two animals, both females, were brought from Sumatra to Europe. On 2 July 1959 'Bettina' arrived in Basel, and five months later 'Subur' came to Copenhagen. When I saw Subur on 28 and 30 May, and on 1 and 3 June 1961, she was about three years old, in good health. Although this is the smallest species of rhinoceros, it makes quite an impression with a shoulder height of about 1.20 m. When she raises her head, she makes an even more compact impression.
