Original text on this topic:
Our female black rhino ?Kenia' lost the front horn last year and it was growing again. The new growth started at the end of July 1985 and until the middle of December, in 4 ? months, there was an increase along the front curve of 4 cm. That means a monthly increase of 0.9 mm. In the next five months until mid May 1986 the horn grew only one centimeter from 13.5 to 14.5 cm. That is a monthly increase of only 0.2 mm. This reduced growth is probably due to the fact that the animal had to be kept inside during the winter and it abraded the horn more than usual. From the end of 1986 to end January 1987 the horn grew with 6 cm. The distance from the horn base to the tip along the curve is now 20.5 cm. In the last 8 months there was a growth of 0.7 cm per month. This is similar to the growth rates in the Indian and the White rhinoceros reported by Lang and Kl?s.
