Chicago Zoo. The afternoon prior to the birth, the mother took a sudden violent dislike to the male parent and charged him repeatedly, knocking him down 2 or 3 times before the pair could be put into separate stalls. After separation, the mother apparently was very nervous, walked continuously about her stall, and beads of perspiration were in evidence over her entire body except on her legs. She was no doubt suffering great pain; however, the birth of the calf was a very easy one and without seeming effort.
