Burma. It is certain that the calves remain with the mothers to an advanced age. The Shans, with whom I hunted, used to say that the scarcity of rhinoceros was largely due to the fact that the mothers are accustomed to treat their young in a very brutal fashion; frequently tossing them over their backs!
