A report on the effect of rhino horn on snake-bites, after some cases were published recently in the Bataviaasch Handelsblad. The structure of rhino horn is told. He said that thin sections are cut from the horn and these are put on the wound caused by a poisonous snake, until they drop off on their own accord, having attracted the poison and the blood from the wound. The patient is then free from danger. He said that he had done experiments on dogs, which he wounded with Curare, after which he attached sections of rhino horn to the wound, without any effect. The same negative effect was found after attaching 'oepas radja.' He also mentioned the mistake that a cup made from rhino horn would have the power to recognise if a fluid poured into it contains poison.
From these fact, he suggested that the rhinoceros horn belongs to the group of those absolute sympathetic cures, of which the Materia medica used to be full, just like Bezoar stone, Lapis del porio, etc.
