Circus Warrer & Co., USA, 1873. From the New York Tribune: A letter sent from Red Bird, a small town in Monroe Country, Illinois, tells about the escape of a rhinoceros which belongs to the Menagerie and Circus of Warrer & Co. and was to be shown in the arena for the first time. The owner had prepared the animal to be shown, and had attached two strong ropes to a ring in the nose. It was thought that 24 men would be enough to direct the animal. It let itself taken out from its cage easily, but when it reached the arena, it raised its head unexpectedly, and by shaking its head left and right, it got loose from the men and went through the tent. The animal was caught and returned to its cage. The damage was estimated at about 3000 dollars.
