Anonymous, 1981. Unusual pedicure for Brookfield black rhino. International Zoo News 28 (3): 41-42

  details

Location: Captive - North America
Subject: Diseases
Species: Black Rhino

Original text on this topic:
Male Diceros bicornis in Chicago Brookfield. The animal developed cracks in the toenails of both her front feet. Much like the separations that horses can sometimes develop in their hooves, complications can, if left unattended, lead to infection and even lameness. The operation was done very carefully and quickly, 65 minuts from start to finish, with an epoxy substance. First the rhino was completely anesthesized. Then work began on the nails of both feet with the epoxy laid in the cracks so the toe can grow in and mend.
