Original text on this topic:
Rhino were, and probably still are, very numerous round Meru, and they mostly had very big horns. I went after one and was able to drop it without much difficulty. Its front horn was thirty-four inches and the back one about twenty-two; so I was very pleased, as this is the best I have shot. At one time the Meru used to trap rhino in gamepits and sell the horns to Swahili traders, apparently for making some sort of medicine; but the Government stopped that, and rhino are now strictly limited to two per annum on each hunting licence.
