Original text on this topic:
My first christmas in the tropics I spent in Serapoh, and the next day I returned on my pony to the plantation. There Javanese are working to imrpove bridges and bad pieces in the road. On my arrival one of the headmen told me that a rhinoceros was standing near the road. As I only carried a revolver of small callibre, I wrote a note to a European living nearby asking for a gun. The pachyderm still stood on the place indicated, quietly eating young leaves of trees and bananas. I was only 20 steps away from him, but guarded by a fallen tree and a small stream which was quite muddy. After a while a second rhinoceros appeared, he looked at, put his head on the fallen tree and continued staring in my direction. The first horn was shining black and about 20 cm long, the second was quite small. I was still aiting for the bearer to return with a gun. The animals also did not really like the presence of a man, or maybe the sun was to hot, because they slowly retreated into the forest and disappeared.
