At that time the only previously known white rhinos belonged to the southern race, (C. s. simum), south of the Zambezi, over 2500 kilometres away. These had been reduced to relict populations once said to number 10 individuals. Now the situation is reversed. There are over 3000 southern white rhinos re-distributed throughout their former range.
