Original text on this topic:
In the case of one of these species, that is the Javan Rhinoceros (Rhinoceros sondaicus) we have a species so reduced in numbers that in the past few years most of the individual specimens still existing have become well known. It is very difficult to estimate how many of these animals exist to-day; it is possible that the species still thrives in Sumatra, from where it was originally described, but after the slaughter which took place in the Island some years ago it is doubtful whether many remain alive. A few may still exist in West Java, and perhaps there are a few left in the Malay Peninsula; in the more northern part of the range of distribution the species would appear to have been exterminated many years ago.
