The white rhino is only found in the north-east of Uel?. It is true, Lang says that according to a native chief, the black rhino would have existed in N.E. Uele and adjacent regions, together with the white rhino, until relatively recently; it would have been completely wiped out during the terrible Rinderpest epidemic which raged through Uele at the start of the 20 th century. However, at this time, only the white rhino lives in Uele.
During my journey through Uel? in 1925, I noticed that this area of distribution of the white rhino was little known. Even the officers upholding the game laws often did not know the difference between the black and white species, while some even told me that only the black rhino existed there.
