Original text on this topic:
Area of distribution. Imagine a horizontal line from Kouki [7.10 N, 17.18 E] in the east, passing the [rivers] Nana Bakasso, Ouham and Fafa, through a place about 30 km south of Batangafo [7.18 N, 18.18 E] where the Dy and Fafa rivers come together, and continuing towards Fort Crampel [=Kago Bandaro, 6.59 N, 19.10 E]. That line is the southern boundary of the rhino's distribution. Towards the north, the animal cross the border with Chad and the rhinos which still exist around Gor?e and Moissala vertainly mix with those of west Oubangui. On a north-south axis, it is sure that rhinos exist on both sides of the Bahr Sara (which is the name for the Ouham River after its confluence with the Fafa river at Batangafo.
East of the Ouham/ Bahr Sara. Blancou knew the animal in the triangle of Kabo [7.39 N, 18.37 E] - Batangafo - Ouandago [7.13 N, 18.50 E], and between the bahr Sara and Kabo.
At the end of 1948, tracks were found by a European near the village Sabo. On 16 June 1948 I saw a track, 23 x 22 cm, south of batangafo, along the Dy river, about 15 km east of the Bouca-Batangafo road. Locals confirmed the existence of several rhino in that area.
West of the Ouham/ Bahr Sara. The species only occurs along the Nana Barya, in the district of Dokor, which touches the Bahr Sara. The rhinos in this region certainly cross the Yassa River towards the south, but never reach the Nana Bakasso. They mainly live in the rectangle, in the north bounded by the line formed by the Nana Barya, from the village of Maissou to the confluence with the Bahr Sara, in the south the identical portion on the Yassa River. This entire rectangle is in the Dokor district. In September 1948, the chief of the village Maita on the Nana Barya told me that rhinos occur all around the village, which he estimated at about a dozen. On 25 dec 1948 i saw tracks of several rhino SE of Moissou. On 27 Dec 1948 i found an old carcass of a dead rhino. A young animal, skull length 52 cm. Certainly Diceros bicornis .
Rhinos do not exist in the districts of Markounda, Boni and Kouki.
The last rhinos killed in the Dokor district were two animals shot by a European in 1938.
