Original text on this topic:
Rhinoceros sondaicus . A few years ago a prolonged search for this rhinoceros in the Victoria Point Subdivision of the Mergui District by an expedition formed by Mr. Vernay was fruitless, and led to the conclusion that it is now very nearly extinct in the only locality where it was likely to be found in fair numbers.
In 1930, under authority of a special permit from Government, I spent ten days or so in search of this rhinoceros in the forests of the Victoria Point Subdivision. I saw one rhinoceros which, judging bv the locality, was very likely an immature specimen of sondaicus; but it did not give me sufficient time to confirm the fact. It may have been a specimen of the Sumatran rhinoceros. The habitat of the javan rhinoceros is also frequented by the Sumatran rhinoceros: this association and the difficulty in distinguishing between the tracks of the two species render it difficult to write with any confidence in respect of the former.
