It is found at this time (around 1958) that the Mt Kei and Mt Otze reserves are ecologically unsuitable for the white rhino as they consist of dense forest. There are very few rhino there. It is estimated that there are no more than 35 specimens. The numbers in the Mt Kei area decreases during the last eight years.
The reserves of Mount Kei and Mount Otze are ecologically unsuitable. Although they are often mentioned as rhino protection areas, the map published in 1961 by the `Directorate of Overseas Surveys' gives them as `Game Controlled Areas'.
