A small, short-headed, long-legged species of rhinoceros with small horns became known in 1922 from a specimen imported by Carl Hagenbeck in 1922 from the Kunene area of South West Africa. It was designated as Diceros bicornis occidentalis. It also differs considerably from other races of black rhinos in the shape of the skull.
