A white rhino was poached on private land near Tzaneen. The ESPU initiated an intensive 14-week investigation into the crime. An AK-47 was used to kill the rhino, and the horn was valued at R122.000 ($24.180). In early Feb 1998, they arrested an employee of the Northern Province Nature Conservation dept. and charged him with the crime. He reportedly used official vehicles in his poaching activities. It is believed that he planned to sell the rhino horn to provide bail for his brother who was arrested in Randburg in 1997 on a similar charge.
