Original text on this topic:
In October 1948, a cursory preliminary count clearly indicated that the total White Rhino exceeded 300. After this, arrangements were made for two organized counts where special consideration was given to 9a) available water supply which would prevent rhino from wandering over long distances; (b) visibility which is very limited in long grass and in bush thickets with heavy shrub growth, which conditions generally exist from January to May deping upon rainfall; (c) completing the count in as short a period as possible.
The first count was from 3 to 9 November 1948. For this purpose, 3 European game rangers and 75 Natives were employed under the direct supervision of Senior Game Ranger Adank.
For the first count the total White Rhino amounted to 557:
Full grown, including cows and bulls which could not be identified, 229
Bulls, 74
Cows, 40
Young unidentified, 30
Big calves, 55
Small calves, 59
The second count was from 7-14 December 1948 and an additional European Ranger and 7 Natives were employed. The total for the second count was 554:
Full grown, including cows and bulls which could not be identified, 101
Bulls, 142
Cows, 153
Young unidentified, 61
Big calves, 30
Small calves, 67
Small calves are up to 18 months old, big calves from 18 months to 2 ? years, young from 2 ? to 4 years.
The total number of white rhino counted is higher than any previous total and reflects an increase in the number over the past 16 years. This is confirmed by the number of small calves.
