Original text on this topic:
There have been discussions with the Resident of Bantam and the General prosecutor about the punishment of a person who went against the Nature Conservation Act in this nature reserve (Oedjoengkoelon), i.e. the shooting of a rhinoceros by a Chinese hunter. On further examination it was found that the person was not prosecuted, because in the so-called 'large' act for hunting it is said that the hunting of all animals, including the rhinoceros, would be permitted, which also seems to be the understanding of most civil servants. The accused was told that in future such an act would be persecuted. The Resident of bantam thinks therefore that in future these acts will be punished. The fact that the hunt took place within a nature reserve was totally overlooked.
Our Society, knowing about two other rhinoceroses which have been illegally hunted in the reserve, has asked the Inspector of Forestry to allow the forest police to guard the reserve. The inspector told us that such is possible, but not feasible with the current number of personnel and that it would need additional funding to make this happen.
