1993 October, a pair Diceros bicornis was reintroduced. They are now breeding. The rhinos are housed in a 14 kmy rhino sanctuary within the park, protected by electrified fences and guarded by game scouts. An agreement has been reached to procure 2 further females from Mozambique.

Two black rhinos (Diceros bicornis minor) from Kruger National Park, South Africa, were introduced to Liwonde National Park in Malawi on 27 October 1993. This marked the re-introduction of the species to Malawi where it had been officially declared extinct in 1990.
