The study was aimed to observe the characteristic of sumatran rhino body muscles and compared with domestic animals which has similarity on anatomy, phylogenetic, and behaviour. One cadaver of Sumatran rhino named Torgamba donated from Sumatran Rhino Sanctuary (SRS) Way Kambas that had been preserved in 10% formaline fixation was used in the study. The muscles were observed macroscopically after the skin was cut and opened. The origin and muscle insertions were determined after dissecting the fascia and muscle. The muscles were identified and named based on literature and Nomina Anatomica Veterinaria 2012, and documented with a camera. The muscles found in neck, thorax, and abdomen were the splenius, semispinalis capitis, obliquus capitis cranialis et caudalis, longissimus capitis et atlantis, longus colli, serratus dorsalis cranialis et caudalis, iliocostalis thoracis, longissimus dorsi, spinalis et semispinalis, levatores costarum, multifidi, intercostales externi et interni, scaleni, transversus thoracis, obliquus externus abdominis, obliquus internus abdominis, transversus abdominis, rectus abdominis, iliopsoas, and psoas minor. The result showed that the Sumatran rhinos body muscle are generally resemble to the body muscle of pig and horse. However, there were differences in muscle structure especially of the serratus dorsalis cranialis et caudalis, intercostales externi, rectus abdominis, and obliquus capitis cranialis. The differences were presumed to be related to the adaptation of body size, habitat, and their behavior.
