Postcard from the Mosteiro da Batalha (Batalha or Battle Monastery in the city of Batalha in Portugal). <br>This Monastery is from XIV century and was built (the most part) by 'Rei D. João I' (portuguese King John I). In the time of the King 'D. Manuel I' the monastery received several modifications and was enriched with many artworks are some alterations to it's exterior decoration. The substitution of the former gargoyles was one of these many changes.<br>In the 'Claustro do Silêncio' (Claustrum of Silence) we can see, dated from 1520, a unique gargoyle representing a beautiful indian rhinoceros.<br>From the collection of Nuno Carvalho de Sousa. |
