This painting was found in the kunstkammer of Rudolf II, Holy Roman emperor 1552-1612. It was sent to him by his ambassador to Spain when it arrive in Lisbon in 1577. It represents 30 years of rangling with his uncle, Philippe II, king of Spain, who possessed the animal. When the animal was killed in 1603, Rudolf was finally allowed to purchase the bones, which he reassembled and displayed in a special room. The skeleton was said to have been sold at auction in 1702. The painting is in the Austrian National Library in Vienna. |
