This rarely seen engraving by Jacobus Neefs (1610-1660) and Andries Pauwels the elder (1600-1639) after the work of Abraham van Diepenbeeck appeared in Antonium a Burgundia's 'The Vices & Remedies of the Tongue, Emblematic expressions', Cnobbaert, Antwerp, 1631. Consisting of 93 small (72 X 101 mm) emblemata to the left and a short text on the right-side page. A rather forlorn rhinoceros is placed among three other more domesticated animals. A branch of singing birds frames this rustic scene. |
