Description: This engraving by the young Florentine Enea Vico (1523-67) was the first important artist to copy Dürer's woodcut and helped to popularize the image. It was published by Antonio Salamanca in Rome.

Copper engraving, 265 x 365 mm.

Faust 2003, p. 16 (no. 689.1 and 689.2)
There are two states of the engraving. In the first, there is no indication of the publisher. In the second, the text has this addition: Ant. Sal. exc., i.e. Antonio Salamanca excudit.

Nascano questi Animali nelle diserte montagne del’India. E’dilane su portato uno in Portogallo, del quale fedelimente e fatto questo ritratto; e come gui si comprende e di Scaglie’ durissime coperto, della similitudine. & colore di quelle de la Testuggine. Et è di grandezza degli Elefanti, coni quali filio guerra, et ne sono vittorioso och essendo di ueloce corso, gli danno de urto totto il corpo, et las pelle con le scaglie asprissime gli squarciano, Et co’ l’anito del corno che sopra il naso tengano gli at terrano, Chiamasi Rinocerus, ô vero Rinoceronte.
