Black Rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis), a single horn on wooden base, base circumference 55cm, outside curve 62cm, weight approximately 4.5kg including mount
Provenance: Belonged to the vendor's grandfather, John Arthur Gibbs, late of Goddards, Abinger Common, Surrey. Goddards is an Edward Lutyens designed house, now owned by The Landmark Trust. The house was full of hunting trophies, in the form of mounted antlers and even a bison's head in their private bowling alley. The vendor's earliest memory of seeing the horn would be in about 1943. It lived at the bottom of the stairs outside his grandfather's study. It was always assumed that it was 'bagged' by him, though it is quite possible that it was passed on to him by his father, Revd. John Lomax Gibbs.
Hammer: £50000.00 |
