Woolly Rhino Distribution 2022-2026 (hits:3)
The woolly rhinoceros (Coelodonta antiquitatis Blumenbach 1799) and the woolly mammoth are main representatives of the Pleistocene megafauna. There is a surprising dearth of research on the woolly rhinoceros in Poland given the relative abundance of its remains. We have thus no knowledge of the details of the woolly rhinoceros’ presence; in particular, we do not know in geographical terms how widely it was distributed across Poland. We do not know either if its presence was permanent, temporary, or periodic. Further, none of the studies conducted so far have addressed the ancient DNA, which could shed light on ancient populations.
In an ongoing (2022–2026) project, entitled “Unraveling the chronological, geographical, and taphonomic complexities of the occurrence of the woolly rhinoceros in the Pleistocene contexts of Poland (WOOLRHINOPOLI) and Europe” we will strive to unravel these questions by examining the remains of the woolly rhinoceros from Poland, the North Sea, and selected European countries (Germany and the Czech Republic: Ivo Verheijen; the Netherlands: Thijs van Kolfschoten; the United Kingdom: Adrian Lister and Tony Stewart; France: Manon Hullot; Spain: Diego Jaime Alvarez Lao; Italy: Luca Pandolfi; Romania: Vlad Codrea; Moldova: Roman Croitor; Poland: Kamilla Paw?owska, Pawe? Mackiewicz; Beringia: Andrey Puzachenko).

Save Sumatran Rhinos (hits:200)
The Sumatran rhinoceros has lived throughout Southeast Asia for millennia. But over the past century, its population has been nearly erased as a result of poaching and habitat loss. Today there are fewer than 80 Sumatran rhinos left in the world. Hanging on to existence in 10 fragmented sub-populations across two islands, this rhino is so rare that few people have ever seen one in the wild. Separated by mountainous terrain, Sumatran rhinos now struggle to find mates in the wild to breed their next generation.
If we don’t act now, the Sumatran rhino will very likely go extinct in our lifetime.

BHL - Biodiversity Heritage Library (hits:61)
The Biodiversity Heritage Library improves research methodology by collaboratively making biodiversity literature openly available to the world as part of a global biodiversity community. Inspiring discovery through free access to biodiversity knowledge.
This is a great resource, the first portal for all older zoological literature, as stated all with free and open access to all users. The RRC is of course much indebted to all people involved in this great project which will of course be ongoing for many more years. No research in natural history these days could ever be complete without the help of BHL which combines resources of many great libraries around the world, all accessible from our own homes and offices. Thank you BHL.

Australian Rhino project (hits:138)
Founded by Ray Dearlove, the ultimate goal of The Australian Rhinoceros Project is to ensure the survival of these majestic species by making a significant contribution to ex situ conservation breeding efforts in order to ensure species survival outside of the range states where the issue persists. The objective of such programs is to maintain a viable population outside of the range state, with targeted genetic and demographic management that will allow for the repatriation of African rhinoceros back to their natural habitat and homelands. The scope of this objective should not be underestimated, as it could be generations before this environment is secure and free from poaching.
