Nieuw wildreservaat op Sumatra.

New Game Reserve on Sumatra: in the swampy areas of the Wai Kambas the rhinoceroses still roam
The one-horned rhinoceros still occurs in this region

Much progress has been made recently in the protection of the flora and fauna of Sumatra. For a large part this success can be attributed to the actions of the higher authorities, who have learned to appreciate Indian nature. Among them is the Resident of the Lampong Districts, Mr H.R. Rookmaker [sic, = Rookmaaker], through whose proposal again an important game reserve has been announced. The new eserve called ‘Wai Kambas’ is now official.

The ’Way Kambas’ reserve is in the subsection Soekadana of the Lampong Districts. It is a swampy area, but there are a few higher parts. The soil is infertile, which means that no commercial interests are hurt. As this area is inhospitable and difficult to reach, the game should have a quiet existence.
There are hardly any people in the region. There are a few abandoned villages, of which the inhabitants left to places where there is chance for agricultural jobs. On the northern border of the reserve there is a small village with 111 people living in homes on stilts. Apart from some forest tracks, rivers are the only way to enter the reserve.
The terrain consists of lowland with few hills and much swamp. During the dry season this swamp dries up, but in the rainy season it is flooeded and then totally inaccessible. The game retreats to the higher ground. Most parts are covered by forest with dense undergrowth.

In this area there are still found examples of the one-horned Rhinoceros sondaicus (the Badak Serkaja).
The presence of this species gives the new reserve a special importance. Five or six of these animals have been observed. However these animals are very shy.
