Original text on this topic:
Antidote for snake poison. I must tell you about some extraordinary effects of the rhinoceros horn. Mr Baumgarten of Kraton wrote to his relations in Malacca that he would like to receive some snake-stones to cure snake-bites. They could not comply with his request, as these stones were difficult to obatin, but they sent him a few small pieces of rhinoceros horn, with the remarks, that these would be equally effective, when they are soaked in vinegar for two or three minutes and then put on the wound. I have tried this experiment in five persons which had been bitten by snakes, at Taloon, Kraton and Winogan, and cured them all within half an hour.
At Kraton a koeli [worker] had been bitten in his fingers by a snake; it was at night and before people had alerted Mr Baumgarten, the poor man was dying. Immediately Mr Baumgarten used the horn, following the instructions mentioned above, and the wound was completely healed in half an hour.
The horn has an extraordinary effect. It is not necessary to rub the place where the snake bit. Even if the horn is placed at a little distance from the wound, it will make its own way to there. When the horn is taken away from the wound, one should put it in milk or water for half an hour, to allow the poison to leave the horn - and then the horn can be used again effectively as before. The piece of horn is about ? line thick, and the circumference of a gobang is sufficient. I offer these comments, because they can save many lives, when this treatment is used.
