America's first rhino - Marmaduke Burrough. Marmaduke Burrough (1798-1844), a Philadelphia trained doctor, in 1828 was apointed American Consul in Calcutta. (Papers acquired by William L. Clemets Library, University of Michigan). Burroughs was offered two rhinos from the plains north of the Brahmaputra river by Andrew Davidson. On 15 March 1830, one was a 6 week-old male, 5 ft 6 in long, 3 ft 6 in high. The other a female, 3 years old, 4 ft high. Price: 2000 rupees for the pair.
Female died before shipment. The male and the skeleton and skin of the female were shipped on the Georgian leaving June 1830, cost of shipment 500 rupees. Arrived Philadelphia in October 1830. Rhino exhibited at Maelzel's Hall, 48 South Fifth Street, from 9 December 1830. Burroughs offered the animal for sale on 20 November 1830. Purchaser unknown, but probably James Raymond and Darious Ogden, as animal was exhibited in 1831 by their New and Rare Collection of Living Animals. Late summer and fall in Ohio, south through Kentucky and ended the year in Savannah, Georgia. Rhino exhibited with this circus in 1832, 1833, 1834. Afterwards merged with Zoological Institute, and rhino advertised through 1837, then silence.
