Vernay stalked her on foot and shot her through the neck, at a range of about twenty yards, killing her with one bullet. The neck shot is the most deadly for rhino, aim being taken between the deep neck creases, which are such a marked feature of this curious animal, about two-thirds of the way up the neck. For this shot a soft-nosed bullet is best.
