Part of Kaziranga is located in this district and hence rhinos in small numbers regularly move out to the neighbouring paddy fields and tea plantations. In February 1993, a lone rhino entered a tea plantation near Ghiladari. In January 1994, one such stray animal was shot dead by poachers near Barua Bamungaon.
