Original text on this topic:
Sporadic south and more common north of the Kunene, and also in the Kunene valley. Steinhardt mention the following regions as islands where the rhino occurs:
Lower Ugab, especially at its mouth;
A few individuals are found near Outjo.
In a few specimens the Kaoko rhino lives at the mouths of several coastal rivers. Four animals were found on the lowest Huab, four on the mouth of the Ugab and five on the mouth of the Koichab.
Other localities: lower Hoanib up to Oas; 2 specimens near Orusewa, one male each near Otjitundua and Otjikuara, 5 specimens near Oruvandji (in the years 1915 and 1918).
The rhino is more common in the region west of Kaoko-Otavi and from there in a 30 km wide strip up to Okau?rua (1917); districts of Great and Small Ombasu, middle Hoarusib, Omuhonga Mountains (Ovatjimba paradise).
The Kaoko rhino is numerous in the Kunene valley. According to Steinhardt, one rhino would come to 12 km of the extension of the riverbed.
Still more common is the animal in the Kaokoveld north of the Kunene, where it is less sporadic.
The Kaoko rhino, observed for long periods by Steinhardt, all undertook more or less long wanderings, apparently according to the seasons. For instance, the rhinos which sometimes appear near Outjo come from the middle Ugab region, and the two animals living near Orusewa go to the neighbourhood of Outjo, while the male in Otjikuara often walks far in northeastern direction. The animals from the Large and Small Ombasu go to the Omuhonga Mountains. Nevertheless, for all these animals a certain home locality, probably their place of birth, could be established.
