| He is generally unaccompanied, is unsocial and fierce. Sometimes 7 or 8 assemble and visit a coffee or cinchona plantation where they commit serious depredations by eating the tender shoots and uprooting the younger trees. |

| 1749, 14 January. The government stops the premium on killing rhinos. The numbers were increasing quickly and the rhinoceros is a shy animal, and less dangerous than a tiger. Since 1 Sep 1747 premiums had been paid for the killing of 526 rhinoceroses and 80 tigers, a sum of 606 rijksdaalders. |
