The hardbound edition differs from the Ph.D. thesis in the addition of 16 colour plates. Published by A.A. Balkema of Rotterdam. The book treats the major 18th century explorers of South Africa like James Paterson, Francis Masson, Francois Levaillant, Robert Jacob Gordon, Anders Sparrman, J.R. Forster and Carl Peter Thunberg. The book was the result of a biohistorical research project supervised by Piet Smit and Robert P.W. Visser. |
