Parkinson 1640 |
Author: |
Parkinson, John |
Year: |
1640 |
Description: |
Frontispiece of John Parkinson's Theatrum Botanicum: The Theatre of plants, or, an Herball of large extent. London, T. Cotes (1640). It shows the rhinoceros after Galle's image of the second animal alive in Europe, exhibited in Portugal and Spain 1579-1583. John Parkinson was a founding member of the Society of Apothecaries and a famous botanist. The inclusion of the rhino in his frontispiece is certainly a reference to the Society's coat of arms, which was granted its charter just twenty three years earlier. |
