Description: |
Red-billed oxpeckers were once considered a symbiotic relationship because the birds feed on ticks attached to rhinos, but recent research indicates these birds ar more likely to feed on rhinos directly, by pecking at the animal's wounds to keep them open. The rhino does not perturbed even when the bird disappears inside its ear. Photos of red-billed oxpeckers and white rhino taken on September 15, 2015 (full rhino shot with multiple oxpeckers) and September 20, 2015 (bird entering ear) by Eric Hedgecock at Sabi Sands Game Reserve.
Jill Hedgecock blog: http://writersotj.wordpress.com
|
