Author: |
Arphe y Villafane |
Year: |
1585 |
Description: |
Arphe (1535-1603) was a Spanish engraver and goldsmith of german desent working in Madrid at the time of the arrival of the second rhino that King Philip brought back from Portugal. Arphe published this manual for silversmiths, sculptors and architects approximately around 1585 and it went thru at least five editions. He used a close rendition of Dürer's rhino, which suggests that Philippe Galle's more realistic interpretation (1586) was not yet popular or even in circulation. Note also that he left out Dürer's dorsal horn. |
