Della Porta 1586 |
Author: |
Giambattista della Porta |
Year: |
1586 |
Description: |
Giambattista della Porta's book 'De humana physiognomia' was first published in Naples in 1586. In his 'Physiognomy' he often uses animals to illustrate human characteristics; character or personality from outer appearance. This early edition is interesting in that the illustrations are engraved in copper rather than the better known woodcuts in later editions. This is page 158 of the second book in a small Octavo format (15.8 X 10.2 cm). In later life, della Porta's private museum was visited by travellers and was one the earliest examples of natural history museums. It inspired the Jesuit Athanasius Kircher to begin a similar, even more renowned, collection in Rome. |
