Well, no news, but there are some new pictures (provided by Steve Romo) of Andalas. The pictures were made in Novemeber.

Search for Andalas in the Rhino Pictures Section!

Thanks for this
Very nice photos.

Sorry to be so anal, but the Cincinnati photos are not from November. Harapan is very small and the leaves on the trees and plants are very green.

But brilliant photos.

The photos of Andalas are very nice, interesting how he is loosing his hair.

Happy new year aswell!

You sure have eye for detail! How come you have such interest in Andalas and anything related to the Sumatran Rhino?

PS. I sent you a personal message!

Thanks

Well it’s an Asberger trait!

Andalas is the world most famous rhino. So great when finally he was born after all the effort. The Sumatran rhinoceros is a flagship species and very charming, ancient creatures. I am great fan of the fantastic work Dr’s Roth team has done in Cincinnati.

The photos are great, surprised there are no photos of Suci. She must have changed very much by now.

As there is still no rhino cam, it would be nice to get new photos from Cincinnati of their royal rhino family.

All the best

Feddi,

The rhino cam seems to be working: http://www.aroundcinci.com/icams/rhino/

The site says this is the indoor rhino cam, but it looks like outdoor to me (it's night now, so i can't really tell for sure). The other rhino cam (see link on site) returns a 'connection failed'.

Thanks

This is their gorilla cam.
Dr Roth told me that they will be setting up a new one shortly.
Will not though be as "tecknical" as the old one.
Shame.
The old one was really good and it was amaising seeing these critically rare youngsters grow up.

Best Regards

Aha, the sun is now shining and I can now see far too many trees for in a rhino pen. (Well, there should be actually more considering thier natural habitat).

Thanks for pointing that out!

Excellent new report from Way Kambas SRS in our database:

"Sumatran Rhino Sanctuary, Way Kambas National Park, Sumatra, Indonesia - Periodic Curator's report, January - December 2007"

Torgamba doing well and interesting to read how his health has improved in the latter part of 2007. Brillian that they are getting help from Australian vets aswell. They are really looking well after the animals.
Good to know that all the females are cycling normally. Bina not able to breed jet as avoiding Torgamba and fighting with Andalas.
Addidionally Andalas getting into fights with Ratu and biting her ear and suffering from wound on his nose after fights. But great to see how he is maturing and gainig weight. The heaviest rhinoceros in the SRS by December 2007! But beeing only 6 years and 4 months old, he will need time to mature.

Would have been an option to transfer Bina to Cincinnati, as she is getting old and time running out to get her genetic material to the next generation. She was a "doomed rhino" and I don't think there are any related rhinos left in the whild, same goes for Torgamba. However Ipuh getting old too (he did struggle when last breeding with Emi in Jan 2006) and very costly and risky to move these precious creatures.

Sure Andalas will mature and become less rough with the ladies and would be a brilliant thing if Torgamba could manage to get Ratu pregnant.

All the rhinos doing really well.

Very interesting reading+answering most of my questions for now!

Thanks and Best Wishes

Nicely spotted Feddi,

I often miss these reports, as I'm more focused on other things. Just now I discoverd a massive amount of Rhino pictures on my dad's computer. I'll be adding then in the next weeks, maybe months.

Anyway, there are a lot of SRS pictures and a small selection has already been added.

More, much more will follow!

Some more news on how Andalas is doing!

Please go to the IRF blog for the entire story.

Some behavioural highlights:

QUOTE
Andalas is very interested in the other animals who visit his home, and has even been known to chase wild pigs! Before moving to the sanctuary, Andalas didn’t know how to wallow in mud holes. Andalas’s keepers had to show him how to wallow when he first arrived in the jungle, but this too has now become one of his preferred pastimes.

QUOTE
After he was fully acclimated to his new life in Sumatra, the SRS keepers and vets began introducing Andalas to Bina, Ratu and Rosa. Once or twice a week, Andalas is put into an adjoining stall next to one of the female rhinos, so they can get to know each other through the fence. At first, Andalas mostly fought with the girls – typical rhino behaviour. But now he has started to develop more friendly relationships with Ratu and Rosa. Rosa is still too young to breed, but Andalas and Ratu have now been put in an enclosure together three times. The first two attempts resulted in more fighting, but during their third meeting the two rhinos started to exhibit some courtship behavior. It will still take more time before Andalas is actually ready to breed with Ratu, but the dedicated staff of the SRS will keep trying, and hoping for a pregnancy soon.

Thanks,

Indeed I just returned from SRS (Way kambas) and Andalas was doing great. I'm in an airport lounge now, but will give an update later.
