Hi

I'm studying Zoo Conservation Biology in England and have chosen the Sumatran Rhino for a Conservation project.

I was wondering if anyone here knows of any details on Emi's third birth? According to online news reports I have read, no progesterone supplement was used in this birth and I was keen to read more, but I have not seen any recent documentation.

Does anyone know of anything that has been published in print or online that goes into anymore detail? I would like to know how this pregnancy was actually sucessful without the supplement.

Thanks!

Hi Jamie

Interesting project.

Progesterone was only used in the first pregnancy. This was due to the female having suffered 5 miscariages.
Dr Terri Roth and her team wanted to know if Emi would be able to carry fetus the second time without the progesterone. Emi got one change and since then has had 2 calves without any progesterone.

There is alot of info on the Cincinnati zoo webside and there is a very beautiful book out this autumn, called Emi and the Rhino scientist: http://www.marykaycarson.com/wor...s/?p=24#more-24.

It's aimed at adolescents, but alot of info in it and very facinating photos.

You will also find interesting articles by Google Dr. Terri Roth.

Fourthly you could try to email the zoo, they are very nice and extreemely helpful people.

Sorry to bug you again! Terri Roth is a lady. She's nice, but not a nice guy!

Anyway, are those articles listed on this site? Could you do a search: Search References?
If not, could you let me know. We might need to request them from her.
