Rhino Resource Center: Rhino Forums > Rhinos In Situ > National Parks in Africa > African rhino records in protected areas

Hello,

i am doing a PhD research study about the ecology of African wild ungulate communities. I am building a data base using census data of the different ungulate species and still looking for number/density data about african rhinos in protected areas. Is here any data base giving relatively precise census results by protected areas ?
Thank you for advice.

Hibert,

I did some searching in the Reference base, but could only find this:
http://www.rhinoresourcecenter.com/index.php?act=refs&CODE=ref_detail&id=1165240939

It's data by country from 1999. Anyway, hope this helps and please come back later as I'm expecting R. Emslie to join the forums pretty soon. Can't promise anything though.

No problem!

Maybe the new CITES report has updated data:

Hope you find what you need here.

Kind regards,

Thank you again for this last reference.
I could find key classes for black and white rhino population in protected areas but no precise number estimation (if available). The idea of my research is to link the metabolic biomass density of different herbivore categories to environmental conditions. I have already estimations for antelopes, zebras and elephants but none for rhinos although they may constitue a non negligible part of the community biomass. The sites that i use and where rhinos are present are, as long as i know, :
Matusadona NP (Zimbabwe), Kruger NP (South Africa), Tsavo East NP (Kenya).
The other sites that i use are (but i don't know if there are rhinos there) :
Isiolo, Hwange, NP Chizarira NP, Serengeti, Ugalla River GCAs, Selous GR, Tarangire NP, Mikumi NP, Moyowosi Kigosi GCAs, Mkomasi GR, Ruaha NP & GRs, N Luangwa NP, South Luangwa NP, Kafue, Ngoma Kafue, Etosha NP, Ngorongoro.
May be this helps. Nevertheless, thanks a lot for the information you already gave me.

Hibert,

I did a detailed search in our present records and could not find distribution numbers per national park/game reserve.

Maybe other users will have the answers to your questions.

Kind regards,

Willem

Most (if not all) of the sites mentioned have rhinos, or had them until recently. The African Rhino Specialist Group only provides numbers for each country for security reasons. The latest breakdown per country is by Emslie in Pachyderm 41 (2007), p. 100. Look at the link to Pachyderm in our links section, you can find the article there. It is very difficult to obtain numbers for individual parks and the census data would not be of the same date.
