Dear All,

I am greatly saddened by the news I just received that Torgamba has passed away in the Sumatran Rhino Sanctuary on Sunday the 24th around 7AM. I felt connected to this rhino as I first saw him in captivity and have closely followed the effort to return him to Sumatra through the many talks with my father Nico van Strien. Torgamba was approximately 5 when he was captured from the wild and has reached an age of 31 years and is the longest surviving Sumatran Rhino in captivity.

I knew that Torgamba had some health problems, but still this news comes as a great shock. I wish all those that work at SRS and the people that were involved with Torgamba all the best and strength through this loss.
Hopefully, all we've learned from Torgamba will soon save the species!

sincerely,

Willem
